Are you ready for Shutter Island?

shutterislandcast2The trailer for Martin Scorsese’s new thriller set to come out this Fall has been released, and let me say I’m extremely excited about this movie. I have been waiting for a scary movie that is actually scary and good much like Silence of the Lambs was back in the 1990’s.

I believe that this movie has a shot to do so with it having an excellent director attached like Scorsese and a Oscar nominated actor to carry it. Leonardo Dicaprio is the lead in the film along with Mark Ruffalo and Ben Kingsley also attached.

Here is the trailer below, let me know what you guys think of it, I know I’m excited.

The Hangover: Movie Review

the-hangover-20090427020414963_640w*Warning Minor Spoilers*

The newest R rated comedy to come out; The Hangover does exactly what it sets out to do.  If you liked movies like Old School, Knocked Up, or Role Models I think you will definitely like The Hangover. The premise of this movie is very simple. 4 guys go out for a bachelor party in Vegas before their buddy’s big day. After a few scenes of introducing the characters which all are very funny but I must say that the character Alan the grooms kind of weird soon to be brother in law played wonderfully by Zach Galifianakis definitely steals the movie with his very comical lines and how he just overall presents the character.  During this time one of my favorite little tid-bits in the movie is where Phil played by Bradley Cooper, and seems to be coming on strong as a leading man in the film industry, is a teacher and scams his kids in bringing field trip money which is actually his Vegas fund. I just thought that was classic and who knows how many teachers actually do it.the-hangover-20090521021917226_640w

So anyway on the night of the party the last time we see all four of the guys together is on the roof of their hotel toasting to “a night we wont forget”.  Trouble is they did forget it.  Along to the next scene where we “wake up” with the cast and you can tell something crazy went down the night before.  With tigers in the bathroom and babies in the closet we are to be assured that this was not your normal bachelor party. There happens to be one huge problem though as the group wakes up, Doug the groom has gone missing.  The question comes to be what the f**k happened last night?the-hangover-20090521021939257_640w

This movie really reminded me of a more grown up version of Dude Where’s My Car? As none of the characters can remember a thing and they have gotten into a huge mess in the process.  So if you enjoyed that sophomoric humor you will enjoy this movie, which has just taken that premise up a notch, and threw it in Vegas.  Other than the 3 friends left searching around and finding clues to where the hell there friend could be there really isn’t much more to the plot.

Like I said before Galifianakis just steals the movie away from Cooper and Ed Helms, who don’t get me wrong are great at playing their parts of the pack leader and whipped boy friend but Glaifianakis will have you laughing the most throughout the movie.  There is a particular scene where he gets shot in the face with a taser gun that I’m sure you have seen in the trailer that just gets funnier every time you see it.  Along with how he interacts with the newfound baby is just priceless.

I have to say though that the very end of the movie while the credits are rolling are probably the funniest part of the movie and really brought the enjoyment of the film up a notch. As the credits roll they take you through screen shots of the night in question from a digital camera and I just lost it when these went up.

So if you’re in the mood to really laugh I would really recommend this movie to any R rated comedy fan. I’m giving it 4 out of 5 stars.

UP: Movie Review

1952-UpMoviePoster

*Warning Minor Spoiler*

I’m going to go out and be completely honest with you guys and say that I’m usually not a fan of children’s animated films.  There have been a few exceptions of course like the Lion King and WALL-E. Both of these films I had a thoroughly good time watching.

So when Pixar and Disney announced their latest movie UP I wasn’t overly excited. I can assure you now after seeing it though; that it should definitely be a movie you should get excited about. UP is a beautifully told story that I believe everyone should see.  As in the case with WALL-E I don’t think this movie started out the normal way most children’s movies would. WALL-E had the wordless opening act and while this movie didn’t have as much of an off beat opening as that it certainly was almost unexpected.

The movie starts out with the main character that you’ve seen in the previews only when he’s probably around 8-10 years old.  He is fascinated with an explorer who went to South America as he wears an explorer cap and goggles while he imagines that he is an explorer. While doing this he meets a young girl around the same age who loves the same explorer and as you can probably guess they start to like each other. The next I would say 10 minuets of the film is a montage to music of the couple growing up getting married and growing old together until Ellie the woman eventually dies of old age.  This is a really heartbreaking scene of events as you can tell that they both really love each other and that Carl is really not the same after she passes. Well as you can imagine Carl really has nothing left to do while he’s alone in his house.UP Disney Pixar May 29, 2009_2_jpg

The next step for Carl is to try and make his and Ellie’s dreams come true and go to South America like their once favorite explorer did years ago.  Carl comes up with a contraption to make his house carry hundreds of helium balloons to carry him to South America. Little does he know that a little named Russell who is a Boy Scout type is along for the ride. From here on Russell and Carl eventually make it to the mysterious place in South America where an apparent adventure ensues with talking dogs and crazy looking birds.  Not to give too much away the story goes from there and it’s a really fun ride.up-20090512041843813_640w

UP is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time and I know I have said that a lot lately about the movies I have seen, but what can I say all the movies that have come out recently I’ve just really enjoyed.  Although UP has definitely been one of the best movies I have ever seen. The relationship that builds with the main characters of Carl and Ellie even in the short time you see it is really a beautiful thing and don’t be surprised if you shed a tear or two when she passes. Carl’s character really reminded me of the old guy you have to love, much like a Walter Matthau character would have been. I personally loved Carl as he turns out to be like a bad ass at the end of the movie and even some people clapped during his scenes in the movie. There is a great character named Doug who is a dog with a voice recognition collar so you can hear what he’s saying and some of his lines definitely do steal the movie. Russell and Carl also have an interesting relationship in the movie as well that’s a little hard to figure out during the movie but in the end is a really great thing to see.

So in the end I would say that UP has it all: action, drama, romance, and comedy. It definitely just jumped into probably my top 10 all time favorite movies if not top 5.  So if you were on the fence about seeing UP I would highly recommend it as it’s the first movie to receive a 5 star rating from me.

Drag Me To Hell: Movie Review

drag-me-to-hell-poster-560x829Drag Me To Hell is flat out one of the most fun times I have had at the movie theater in a long time. I’m going to say though that attending the opening night in Times Square New York City probably had a little something to do with that, but the movie was still a really good time.

For those of you who don’t know anything about this film, its’ Sam Raimi’s much awaited return to the horror genre from his days of the Evil Dead trilogy.  For those die hard fans of that series, this is truly Raimi’s movie to please those fans who love the almost slapstick form of horror that Raimi likes to make.  Make no mistake though this is truly a pretty scary movie as many people jumped and screamed very loud in the theater.

The story is about a woman named Christine Brown played very believably by Alison Lohman. Christine is your typical “too nice” girl who is trying to get a promotion to be assistant manager for the bank that she works at. To get the job her manager says that they’re looking for someone who is willing to make the tough decisions. Pretty much right after this conversation, is a very tough decision to come for Christine as a older women comes to Christine for a 3rd extension on her mortgage for her home.  This is where Christine makes the tough but correct decision to make this old woman homeless and not deliver the 3rd extension. This is where the movie gets a little over the top as well as great. drag-me-to-hell-20090106061127872_640w

So distraught at the thought of being homeless the woman proceeds to beg to Christine for the extension, but in the end does not get it. Later that night while Christine gets in to her car the older woman happens to already be inside and after a pretty big rustle and tussle the woman curses Christine’s button from her coat and from then on Christine is cursed for 3 days before she will be dragged to hell.  That’s basically the whole point of the movie.

For the three days that Christine is tortured by this ghost the movie just gets over the top outrageous.  This is why its just such a fun movie, the over the topness that Raimi likes to show just makes the scares that much more fun to be apart of.

The fighting scene in Christine’s car was probably one of my favorite scenes in a movie that I have seen in a very long time. You just want Christine to beat the crap out of this old lady who is somehow still fighting after she has staples punched into her head as well as a ruler shoved in her mouth.  Raimi really put Lohman through the ringer in this movie as she is covered with blood, spit and vomit many different times in the movie. I don’t want to give too much away so ill just say that.drag-me-to-hell-20090413052317504_640w

Justin Long plays the great boyfriend very nicely in this movie as you genuinely feel sorry for him sometimes that he has to deal with his girlfriend and this curse.  There is also a scene where while Christine is being haunted by the spirit she has to meet his parents for the first time. Now as we all know this is a very awkward situation to begin with where you really want to make a good impression. It doesn’t really help when you start screaming at the wall for no reason in the parents eyes haha. You really start to pull for Christine as most of the girls you see in scary movies do the really dumb move somewhere or another where as Christine is pretty smart all the way through, and you just hope she makes it. The graphics in the movie were decent enough. I mean when you have a talking goat that acts like a demon what else can you ask for :). The make up used for the old gypsy was pretty astounding as you really got scared by just looking at her. Over all like I said before and in hopes I’m not repeating my self too much it was just a flat out fun movie.

I usually really like all stupid movies that go into the theaters but this one is a big exception. I loved Drag Me To Hell and I would recommend any fan of the horror genre to go immediately to see this movie. With my 5 star rating I would give this movie a 4 out of 5.

Terminator Salvation Movie Review

terminator-salvation-20093Terminator Salvation is a fast, fun, and furious good time. It may not be the Terminator movie that I was necessarily hoping for, but it was a very good movie in my opinion anyway.

The movie takes place in the year 2018 with John Conner (played very nicely by Christian Bale) an older and more badass than the previous two forms of John Conner that we saw in T2 Judgment Day and Terminator 3 Rise of the Machines.  This is the John Conner we’ve been waiting for. The John Conner that would stand up and lead the resistance. We also meet some new characters, Marcus Wright (Same Worthington) who actually opens the movie in the year 2003 as an inmate on death row and has just signed his body over to a Skynet medical researcher. Fast-forward to the year 2018 and he is “reborn” if you will in a rainstorm where he doesn’t know where he is or what year it is. He comes across a young teenager by the name of Kyle Reese (for those who have seen the first Terminator movie, he is the man that is sent back in time to save Sarah Conner and will become John Conner’s Father) and a young girl who help him out with a little explaining of the year and the war against the machines.terminator-salvation_71
Eventually Kyle and Marcus come across the machines that are too much to handle as Kyle and the little girl get captured and transported to Skynet. The scene in which this happens is probably one of the greatest car chases/ action scenes I’ve seen in a long time. Marcus then finds his way to John Conner and a mysterious thing happens that is hinted at in the trailer but I don’t want to give it away in this review as I’m trying to be as spoiler free as possible.  Lets just say that Marcus helps John Conner get into the Skynet facility to save Kyle and hopefully the resistance.New Terminator Salvation Photo

This is an action packed journey with many nods to the Terminator lineage with famous quotes and having Linda Hamilton’s voice in the movie was a very cool thing to hear. One more surprise that totally shocked me with was absolutely great to see and ill leave it at that so you can see it for yourself.

I personally loved the movie as a fun movie that is just a really good time at the theaters. I’m not saying that its perfect by any means as it creates some holes in the mythology where you have to just listen to one of Johns lines where he says, “This isn’t the future my mother warned me about.” If you listen to that you should have no problem with some of the changes that they have made from the first movies. The graphics in the movie are top notch as the late Stan Winston would be very proud.  Conner and Worthington take their roles to extreme heights as co hero’s of the movie and you really connect with both for different reasons. All the action scenes are top notch with great gunplay and an always-classic one-handed shotgun pump that never gets old.terminator_salvation1

Overall Salvation is an awesome summer blockbuster that you should definitely check out. If I had to rank it with the 3 previous movies I would say second behind T2, which set the bar for the science fiction genre. So if you’re in the mood for a fun 2 hours of your summer day go see Terminator Salvation. It’s a flat out awesome movie. Out of 5 stars I will have to give it 4-5 stars. Not perfect but pretty damn good.

Holy S**T

nba_g_lebron11_576So I don’t know how many of you are big sports or basketball fans in general, but even if you don’t care at all about sports you have to respect what LeBron James did tonight vs. the Orlando Magic.

If you didn’t see the game here is a brief summary of what happened. Cleveland went up fast being ahead by 12 at half time. Orlando came back strong in the second half much like game one and tied the game with 14 seconds to go. Hedo Turkoglu scored with 1.o seconds to go to take the lead 95-96. At this point I thought the game was all but over, but like I said before with 1.0 seconds to go Cleveland somehow got the inbound pass to LeBron James, I have no idea how Orlando even let him touch the ball, but he did and made a remarkable shot to win the game. APTOPIX Magic Cavaliers Basketball

There have been few times where I actually got chills watching an NBA game as I’m not that big of a fan because I don’t have a real team to root for. LeBron James has given me two nights in the playoffs where he has amazed me. His Nike ads have proven to be true. “We are all Witnesses”

Sherlock Holmes Trailer Arrives

sherlock-holmes-posterSo after hearing that Robert Downey Jr. would be taking on the role of Sherlock Holmes in the Guy Ritchie directed film, I was very intrigued on how this would be done. To be completely honest I’ve never really expressed any interest in the stories of Sherlock Holmes, but seeing that Guy Ritchie would be directing and one of my new favorite stars would be acting in the title role I was willing to give this movie a shot.

Now that the trailer has arrived I’m so excited to see the film. The movie looks like another smash hit to add to the already popular titles of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Star Trek, and hopefully Terminator Salvation and Transformers Revenge of the Fallen.

Being that it is a Guy Ritchie film I’m excited to see what different types of action scenes will be placed in this time era. The boxing scene in the trailer already looks pretty badass.

Sherlock Holmes, which stars Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams and Mark Strong, will be released in theaters nationwide on December 25.
