Drag Me To Hell is flat out one of the most fun times I have had at the movie theater in a long time. I’m going to say though that attending the opening night in Times Square New York City probably had a little something to do with that, but the movie was still a really good time.
For those of you who don’t know anything about this film, its’ Sam Raimi’s much awaited return to the horror genre from his days of the Evil Dead trilogy. For those die hard fans of that series, this is truly Raimi’s movie to please those fans who love the almost slapstick form of horror that Raimi likes to make. Make no mistake though this is truly a pretty scary movie as many people jumped and screamed very loud in the theater.
The story is about a woman named Christine Brown played very believably by Alison Lohman. Christine is your typical “too nice” girl who is trying to get a promotion to be assistant manager for the bank that she works at. To get the job her manager says that they’re looking for someone who is willing to make the tough decisions. Pretty much right after this conversation, is a very tough decision to come for Christine as a older women comes to Christine for a 3rd extension on her mortgage for her home. This is where Christine makes the tough but correct decision to make this old woman homeless and not deliver the 3rd extension. This is where the movie gets a little over the top as well as great.
So distraught at the thought of being homeless the woman proceeds to beg to Christine for the extension, but in the end does not get it. Later that night while Christine gets in to her car the older woman happens to already be inside and after a pretty big rustle and tussle the woman curses Christine’s button from her coat and from then on Christine is cursed for 3 days before she will be dragged to hell. That’s basically the whole point of the movie.
For the three days that Christine is tortured by this ghost the movie just gets over the top outrageous. This is why its just such a fun movie, the over the topness that Raimi likes to show just makes the scares that much more fun to be apart of.
The fighting scene in Christine’s car was probably one of my favorite scenes in a movie that I have seen in a very long time. You just want Christine to beat the crap out of this old lady who is somehow still fighting after she has staples punched into her head as well as a ruler shoved in her mouth. Raimi really put Lohman through the ringer in this movie as she is covered with blood, spit and vomit many different times in the movie. I don’t want to give too much away so ill just say that.
Justin Long plays the great boyfriend very nicely in this movie as you genuinely feel sorry for him sometimes that he has to deal with his girlfriend and this curse. There is also a scene where while Christine is being haunted by the spirit she has to meet his parents for the first time. Now as we all know this is a very awkward situation to begin with where you really want to make a good impression. It doesn’t really help when you start screaming at the wall for no reason in the parents eyes haha. You really start to pull for Christine as most of the girls you see in scary movies do the really dumb move somewhere or another where as Christine is pretty smart all the way through, and you just hope she makes it. The graphics in the movie were decent enough. I mean when you have a talking goat that acts like a demon what else can you ask for :). The make up used for the old gypsy was pretty astounding as you really got scared by just looking at her. Over all like I said before and in hopes I’m not repeating my self too much it was just a flat out fun movie.
I usually really like all stupid movies that go into the theaters but this one is a big exception. I loved Drag Me To Hell and I would recommend any fan of the horror genre to go immediately to see this movie. With my 5 star rating I would give this movie a 4 out of 5.
